The Delta Rx Institute:
Robert Soltis, Academic Innovator

by DELTARx
Dr. Robert Soltis is a Professor of Pharmacology and Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Bob is the author of a long list of research publications, many focused on the examination of neural control of cardiovascular function. He brings to Drake an enthusiasm for learning that transfers to students through an effective teaching style.

“Teaching should be approached not as imparting information but rather as helping students learn for themselves.” Dr. Soltis believes that effective teachers are open to student input, realizing that a great deal of information can be learned from their questions and comments. Effective teachers “can convey excitement about the topic without providing all the answers.” Perhaps most important to his philosophy, Dr. Soltis is committed to the idea that “what a teacher knows is of no special value until students come to know and understand it.” By teaching students how to learn and instilling an excitement for knowledge, the spirit of change and growth will be alive in students entering the profession as practitioners, educators, or researchers.
